Examples of Resistance in the Trump Era

There’s no denying it: the election of Donald Trump to another term in the White House has been a blow for social movements in the U.S. Prior to Trump’s election, we were moving forward–if haltingly–on building a clean energy future, making healthcare more accessible, securing greater representation for marginalized groups in the media, and other progressive priorities. There was also a vibrant movement to challenge U.S. imperialism overseas.

Now that Trump is back in office, it often feels like all that progress we were making has been put on hold as we fight just to avoid a wholesale slide into Fascism. That said, there is great work being done by U.S. social movements, both to challenge the administration’s attacks on democratic freedoms and to make forward progress in the areas where we still can. I wrote about a couple of these in my most recent pieces for Waging Nonviolence.

In one story, I explore how the Simplify Solar movement is building momentum for real forward progress on climate action, even at a time when the federal government is digging in on fossil fuels. Check it out to learn more about this inspiring campaign and what it has coming up next.

In another piece, I look at the growing student-led resistance to authoritarianism on campus. Specifically, I show how student and faculty organizing has left Trump’s much-vaunted “campus compact” essentially dead in the water. Read more here.
