My first major activism project was launching the Environmental Consciousness Club, a new student organization at Portland Community College Rock Creek campus. This group helped raise the profile of environmental issues on campus and involved students in sustainability projects. We organized events, gathered support for campus recycling, and held meetings with staff from the offices of both of Oregon’s US senators. Our biggest victory was successfully establishing the first campus-wide recycling system at Rock Creek, diverting thousands of pounds of garbage from the landfills.
